SUP storage and waste management fee for packaging

From Jan. 1, 2023, a number of things will change regarding packaging waste charges and there will be a so-called SUP storage. In this article, we will explain everything clearly for you.

Reduce plastic waste
First of all, it is a good thing for all of us to take care of less waste. In addition, the very use of sustainable disposables, packaging that is easily recyclable, is rewarded. In short; the less plastic a package contains the lower the waste management fee for packaging. And so for packaging without plastic, you don’t pay SUP storage.

SUP Storage
The legislation for “Single Use Plastics,” what is it again? Following the start of these rules in 2021 (including import bans on plastic straws and cutlery), SUP storage will follow from Jan. 5, 2023. The main goal of the SUP directive is to reduce disposable plastics that can enter the environment and encourage the use of more sustainable disposables.

SUP storage applies to single-use food containers made partially or entirely of plastic. A surcharge of €2.30 per 1,000 pieces applies to items we import or produce ourselves. We remit this surcharge to the“Packaging Waste Fund Foundation.

The Waste Fund for Packaging, together with “The Dutch Association of Wholesalers in Paper and Packaging Materials”(NVGP), has compiled a list of point-of-sale packaging to indicate the items for which this surcharge applies. These include (bio)plastic drinking cups, snack containers and ice cream cups. View the list here.

This covers only a small portion of our assortment. Moreover, we already have many products available today that are not subject to SUP storage, such as products made of cardboard (uncoated), bamboo, wood, sugar cane, paper and palm leaf. We will also continue to expand our assortment with new products in the near future.

Packaging Waste Management Fee
There will also be a “Packaging Waste Management Fee” starting Jan. 5. Again, this is only for a small portion of our assortment. And as mentioned above; the more sustainable the packaging (less or no plastic) the lower the contribution. Indicative contributions are between €0.10 and €0.50 per box. And again, these costs are used for trash cleanup.

The rates are based on material types and can be found on the website of the Packaging Waste Fund.

Despite the legislation going into effect as of Jan. 5, there is still much uncertainty because of the large impact this change will have and the complexity of implementing this regulation. We will update this page regularly as more information becomes available.

Keep an eye on this post for updates and developments. It is also advisable to follow the information on the website of the Packaging Waste Fund Foundation yourself .
