The rise of plastic-free disposables A step toward a more sustainable future

Plastic pollution is a growing crisis that threatens our planet. In recent decades, the massive production and use of single-use plastic items has taken a tremendous toll on our oceans, ecosystems and the environment as a whole. Using plastic-free disposables, such as alternative disposables that are biodegradable and compostable, has the potential to have a positive impact on our planet. In this blog post, we will discover what plastic-free disposables are and why they are an important step toward a more sustainable future.

The problem with traditional plastic disposables

Before exploring the solution, it is important to understand the problem. Traditional disposable plastic items, such as plastic cutlery, plates, straws and food containers, are made of non-biodegradable plastic. These items do not break down easily and can remain in the environment for hundreds of years before eventually breaking down into microplastics. They often end up in our oceans, rivers and forests, where they have a devastating effect on marine life and ecosystems.

What are plastic-free disposables?

Plastic-free disposables
are an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional plastic disposables. They are made from natural and renewable materials, such as
bamboo
,
wood
,
palm leaves
and
sugar cane fibers
. These materials are biodegradable and can be industrially composted after use, thus not contributing to plastic pollution. Using these eco-friendly alternatives is a big step forward in the fight against plastic pollution and its negative impact on the environment. Some products are even suitable for home composting.

The transition to plastic-free disposables

While the idea of plastic-free disposables is promising, there are still some challenges we face. First, consumers, businesses and governments must work together to reduce the use of single-use plastic items and embrace plastic-free alternatives. This can be stimulated by awareness campaigns and government policies as already started with the
Single Use Plastics legislation
(SUP).

Plastic-free disposables can be recognized with us by the
Plastic-free and the green leaf” label.

Legislation 2023

As of July 1, 2023
there is a ban on providing free plastic-containing meal containers and coffee cups for consumption on the go. A fee must be paid for the meal package and coffee cup. The guideline amount for this is €0.50 for a complete meal (can consist of several trays) and, for example, €0.25 for a coffee cup. For a loose plastic container for vegetables, fruit, yogurt, toppings or sauce, for example, €0.05 is given as a guideline. These amounts may be waived. At the same time, reuse is encouraged as entrepreneurs also provide
reusable alternatives
must offer for meals.

Legislation 2024

Starting next year, there will be a ban on the use of plastic-containing meal containers and
coffee cups for on-site consumption
. Thus, use of single-use containers with plastic will then only be allowed (including additional payment) for pickup and delivery.
